Petty thief Ashoka “Ace” King knows better than to get in the way of Tophet’s Anti-Terrorist Unit. Rightfully feared in Tophet’s crime-ridden underbelly, a face-to-face encounter with an ATU is almost certainly a death sentence. But Ace has never been one to follow the rules.

Soren Lau might be an ATU rookie, but he’s not naive enough to believe everything his superiors tell him. Then again, he’s not stupid enough to disobey them, either. If he doesn’t shoot and kill as ordered, he might be next on their list.

But when Soren meets Ace, a moment’s hesitation is all it takes to put both their lives on the line. They don’t know each other, they don’t trust each other, and there’s no way in hell they can both walk away from this alive. But with suspicion and mortal danger mounting against both of them — and the forbidden attraction blazing between them — there’s nothing they can do but try.

Good stuff!
By Sinfully
Set in the Bliss universe this still has bleak, ominous Dystopian elements, but from what I've heard about Bliss, I don't think is quite as dark or disturbing in its content as its predecessor. However Tin Man, with its message of a future that doesn't paint a pretty picture, is still a gritty, suspenseful read that introduces us to two fabulous main characters...small time criminal Ashoka 'Ace' King, and Soren Lau, a rookie agent with the Anti-Terrorist Unit aka ATU, sent to clear the streets of its so called 'dangerous' inhabitants.

Like the rest of his peers who live hand to mouth on the streets of Tophet, Ace thieves, then fences his spoils primarily to keep food in his belly and live. It's a lawless society where everyone does what they can to exist; some more violent and dangerous than others but for the most part the 'Crims', as they're known, are just a suppressed sub-society, breaking laws because it's the only way to survive daily.

The ATU is supposed to have been formed to police the more violent, underground terrorist factions that have sprung out of the squalor and oppression of its time, but it turns out their presence on the streets has a more sinister intent; something a newly recruited Soren finds out when after being instructed to execute who he'd been told was a "most wanted" crim, on his first patrol, begins to realize that perhaps his first kill wasn't quite so cut and dried as he was taught to believe, and his chosen career not so heroic.

He and Ace are poles apart in the scheme of things but all that changes the day that a heavily armed and highly teched out Soren (hence Ace's term 'Tin Man') comes face to face with Ace in an exciting but fraught confrontation that theoretically should end in Ace's death, but actually results in the agent's own life hanging in the balance; until his enemy reluctantly saves him and discovers the deeply hidden side of Soren that he if it was discovered could be fatal. A secret, immoral in the eyes of the high ups, that creates an unexpected bond between them, setting in motion a series of events that really places the two of them up the proverbial s*** creek!

Complete opposites, it turns out that their shared sexual leanings are dangerous enough to put both of them in the sights of the very organization that Soren originally thought would be his safekeeping, but things are not what they seem and it's an eye opener that has Soren rethinking everything he thought he believed in...and Ace, chasing a dream that, if it's a reality, could be the actual salvation they're both seeking!

I'm not sure I'd class this as a romance as such, but there's definitely an intense attraction and chemistry between its protagonists that undeniably hints at this being the beginnings of a love story if it had time to run its course. So you still get a hotness factor that sizzles and sparks, but there's nothing lovey dovey about this at all. Character traits are reversed when sex enters the equation, as under the imposing 'Tin Man' uniform, a younger than he projects, closeted Soren's propensity is to submit to the slightly older, more open about his sexuality, Ace. A clever change of perspective that I really loved as, because of their perceived roles in the story, its not the expected dynamic.

Lisa Henry and Heidi Belleau are brilliant writers in their own right, but together they make a great writing team and this shows how good they are at their craft. As impressed as I was, it was all so compelling that I was left wanting more! For a novella it's actually pretty well packed but there were still things I would have loved to have seen more fleshed out. Supporting characters and intriguing background info, that opened up would have probably pushed this to a higher rating. I've no idea if there's a follow up, but the ending is left open in a way that leaves you to your own conclusions about what's ahead for these two characters and actually I can go with that, however, what's hinted at was so enticing, I just wanted to keep on reading. When I finally closed my kindle, I was left slightly unsatisfied...only because the authors are too good at what they do! So, I'm hoping this isn't the last of Ace and Soren because they're far too compelling as characters to disappear into the ether. Fingers crossed.

What I do know is that I'd love to jump straight into Bliss now. Not because I think I've missed anything important by not reading it first—I'd say this can be read as a standalone—but because the world they've built has me craving another fix! Good stuff!

5 stars = I freaking LOVED this book!!!
By Angela S Goodrich
The Bliss series scares the bejeezus out of me. Not because it’s horror or gruesome or gory or anything like that. No, this series scares me because I can easily see the world turning the way of Tophet and Beulah if the wrong people ever got into power and abused their authority. While Tin Man didn’t freak me out as badly as Bliss did, it still affected me because even in this day and age, members of the military are expected to follow orders without question and Tin Man shows just how dangerous that can be.

As we saw in Beulah, the powers that be in Tophet have skewed the laws in their favor and made it nearly impossible for those on the bottom to make a better life for themselves. Being unemployed is a crime. Being homeless is a crime. Publicly speaking out against the government is a crime. Being homosexual is a crime. As Ace meets three of those, he’s definitely considered a criminal by the Tophet government. So when he and his acquaintance, Chen, are asked for their papers to prove their employment and residency, Ace knows that his time is up and does what he can to secure Chen’s escape as the man has saved his life more than once and has children who depend on him. But being a criminal does not mean that Ace is the heartless, amoral animal that Soren has been taught crims are, which proves fortunate for Soren when he finds himself hanging on by the tips of his fingers – literally – trying not to plummet to his death. And yet just as Ace saves his life, Soren still attempts to follow orders and capture the crim. But Ace refuses to go down without a fight and in the midst of their struggle, he learns something very telling about the Anti-Terrorist Unit officer – he’s homosexual. What follows is a scene that is complicated emotionally, but hot as heck as Ace shows Soren the benefit of being a crim. As each man endures their own trials after the encounter, it isn’t until they come face-to-face again that they realize just how much that single encounter affected them.

Despite this being a novella, Henry and Belleau don’t skimp on the storytelling in Tin Man. Because this isn’t a romance per se, there isn’t a happy ending but rather the closing of one door and the opening of another. We don’t know what is to become of Ace or Soren because this is merely one chapter in their lives. The disparities between the classes is quite evident, especially towards the end of the book when we visit Soren’s apartment. That the laws are made arbitrarily and seem to be designed to keep people from bettering themselves, it’s disturbing just how much trust Soren has in his supervisors – at least until a condescending comment is made by a colleague. Yet it was this simple throw away comment that sent Soren’s world spinning off its axis as he began to wonder who it was that he’s really fighting. The chemistry between Ace and Soren is ridiculously hot and we get some seriously angry sex between the two, with the BDSM elements ramping up the heat. I thoroughly enjoyed Tin Man and am already looking forward to the next book in the Bliss series.

I received a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Tin Man
By The Jeep Diva
Extreme opposites attract meets I know I shouldn’t but I’m going to anyways. Soren has not been with Tophet’s ATU (anti-terrorist unit) for long. During his short time he has realized that things are really not as they are presented or how they should be. He knows that the roof over his head and the food in his belly should not be taken for granted and he should just tow the line to make sure that those things remain a constant in his life. All that begins to change when he hesitates on a direct order from Command.

Live another day. That is how Ace makes it through the days that accumulate into life. Most of the time he does not know where or when his next meal will come. He does what he has to do to make it from day to day. Sometimes he steals, sometimes he roots through trash, he always survives. Survival has become increasingly difficult with the way the ATU who seems to be on a constant extermination mission.

All it takes is just one decision and everything in Soren and Ace’s futures is irrevocably changed. Lines are crossed that have dire consequences for both men. Tophet does not tolerate amoral elements and both men are on the wrong side of the morality laws. Neither seems to care when they discover that they are caught up in the middle of something bigger than Tophet, Command, and the territories across the borders.

I enjoyed the story. I found the world, its politics, its citizens, and all of its complications fascinating. At the end of the novella I was left wanting more. There is so much mystery and unknown that I was left with questions. Tin Man is part of the Bliss universe and I have not read Bliss. By the blurb and from what I read here I’m guessing that Bliss takes place years after Tin Man, but I’m not positive on that.

Rapture! Bravo!
By Brandon
What a fantastic book. I just can't say it any better. I had to order this through an out-of-print book seller('The Book Nook', a wonderful company!), and that just added to the fun of reading it. This book has no bad points, whatsoever! I wish it was longer. Joe Hyams writing style is eloquent yet simple enough to bring out Jimmy's true nature. This is the most recent, in a string of 8 Dean biographies I've read, and it's such a necessity to any collection. To slightly contradict myself-my problem was only that it wasn't longer. Not a short read at all, the book was just so easy that it left you wanting to hear more about Jimmy from Mr. Hyams' perspective. It's the most objective standpoint anyone's taken on Jimmy, while still having a theme(angle)to write from. It's hard for me to find a bad Dean bio, simply because of my adoration of the young prodigy, but I can easily spot the great ones! Pick this book up. My used copy was in better shape than many new books I find at large bookstores. Again I must express my thanks to The Book Nook for making it possible for me to own this book, which I will utterly treasure. They work with amazon, so check them out.

One of the best biographies about James Dean
By Jane Austen Sandy
Joe Hyams is a real respectful and informative author who really wanted to write about James Dean what I know James Dean would have written about himself if he were alive today and decided to write about his personal life, which is something James Dean did not like to talk about with the media. Yes, Jimmy did love Pier Angeli whose real name is Anna Maria Pierangeli whom he lovingly called Annarella. This was a name her father called her before he died in 1950. James Dean found a true love in Anna and she in him. There are countless interviews and documentaries that can attest to Jimmy stating that Pier Angeli was the love of his life. Actress Julie Harris, James Dean's co-star in East of Eden mentions in one documentary that Jimmy was always talking about how much in love he was with Pier and how beautiful her soul was. Larry King interviewed co-stars of his who spoke about this very emphatic relationship in James Dean's life. They had many interests and one very important life change in common that is they both lost a parent. Neither one ever forgot about the other and author Joe Hyams wanted to make that known. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. James Dean would be delighted that this part of his life, the joyful part, was written about.
