About the Author

Jim Champy is one of the leading thinkers in business. His first book, Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution, a New York Times Bestseller with more than 3 million copies sold, helped transform the corporate world. Curse the profiteering medical professionals who contributed to the publication

It was published in 2010 and given the time (likely 3 weeks) it took to write, I may be a tad too harsh.

First my comedic response:
If you have ever applied a band aid, then you have far too much healthcare knowledge for this desolate work of literature.
If you are reading this review using the internet then you understand far more than this print can teach you about technology.

Now my justifiable review:
Disclaimer: This book may have not been for me, the intended audience may have been "people who know Jim Champy and felt obligated to read it".

- The book starts off by explaining what "reegineering" is and what "Reegineering the Corporation" is all about. That's okay.
- It goes into laying the foundation and principle belief of reegineering. That's okay as well.
- Jim Champy takes credit that his 1993 publication and previous work is responsible for business today and everything else is just a sublet umbrella term. That's okay, but I'd personally beg to differ.
-It has the nerve to indirectly state "healthcare reform" won't get the job done, but you're safe if you read on.

Now the book finally starts into what you believe will be the good parts. Wrong, spoiler alert, there are no good parts. The book is full of fluff from the body structure to the style of writing. I feel as if I'm reading a freshman's college paper that has a word length requirement. Champy gives bios of those he uses as examples. Long bios that no one cares to hear, because those people mean nothing to setting the tone for discussing reegineering healthcare. "So what:", you say? Let Jim accredit his people. Wrong. The "examples" are just stories of people who did things in healthcare. That's the best way to put it. Nothing ground breaking or really worth hearing. Nothing is laid out as far as applying reegineering methodologies to healthcare.

Amazon did a great job with shipping, I hope they do an even better job with refunding me time lost reading this work.

Let me tell you a story in the way this book is written:
I was stranded in the middle of a dessert with a flat car tire. I drive a 2002 Toyota. [Insert history of Toyota] I didn't have a spare tire. [talk about spare tires and how useful they are]. My cell phone was dead. [talk about how innovative cell phones are]. There was not a car in sight for many miles. I sat for hours. I changed the tire and drove on.

SOMETHING MISSING? Change the topics above to stuff about healthcare and you have the body of this literature. Don't waste your time or money.

Useful Ideas on Process Improvement in Hospitals

I found a lot of useful ideas and interesting stories in Reengineering Health Care, and it was an entertaining read (at least for me, a process improvement wonk).

I read it this week to help me prepare for a meeting I had with a hospital. Our conversation was mostly about how to engage physicians in changing the patient experience, something that is focused on a lot in this book. I particularly liked the various stories of Zeev Neuwirth, such as the way he used data about physicians as a fact-based way to defuse defensiveness, and his approach to choosing 20 high potential up-and-coming physicians for a leadership program.

The process, people, technology framework worked well. There was a little too much on electronic health records for my taste. Traditional reengineering focuses on big change in core end-to-end processes, such as order fulfillment, and this book covers this territory and takes a wider view of organizational change that surrounds process reengineering to highlight the importance of engaging people.

Good Book

My basic review is that it is a good book. Not very detailed in how nor very rich in data, as it contains mostly stories of how new innovation is occurring in healthcare. The authors make a lot of assumptions, and being an IT person in the healthcare industry I can notice where some of those assumptions were made. It seemed to me the authors assume you are familiar with how healthcare works, though that is their target audience.

They make good points that it is the work of people that is needed to make the changes, not just fancy new tech or slick sounding government programs. While new technology is essential, and improved regulation (not necessarily more) will benefit the healthcare industry, much of what needs to change is the culture and delivery of healthcare. We have more knowledge than we ever have, but getting it to people and using it to improve heath is difficult.

This book is just what I needed on my many excursions to garage/estate sales. I have been able to determine better purchases for my collection by referencing my book on my outings. The images are in alphabetical order and are drawn precicely as they are seen on the jars. Info on jar colors for each embossed design is available too. A MUST HAVE for the avid jar collector!!

Alot in a Little Package

Great little book for identifying all those jars you buy at auctions for a buck a box. Alphabetized, clear images exactly as they appear on the jars, even comparative values for many choices per brand by color.

It's not a coffee table book, it's a throw it in your bag and take to the sale book. Perfect!

O'Reilly sells this book both in paper and electronic formats. The electronic formats include PDF, ePub and Mobi. The website provides suggestions as to which version to use on various devices. I did the review using the PDF version of the book.

On October 26th, 2012 Windows 8 became generally available and the first computers using this new operating system are now delivered. For anyone contemplating upgrading to Windows 8 on an old computer or getting Windows 8 on a new computer, this is an excellent book. Extremely well organized the authors take the logical steps a new user should take to understand and get proficient in using this new Operating System. I would have given it five stars, save for the fact that the PDF electronic version of the book does not have "live links" for navigating to references, such as "See chapter `xyz' for more information" isn't a link to the chapter.

The book takes the reader through explanations of what Windows 8 is, what the differences are in each version, how it varies from Windows 7, etc. The authors then go into the setup and personalization of the operating system. Each step is very well illustrated with every chapter having a "Chapter at a Glance Page" and figures throughout each chapter. Thus you have a good idea of what each chapter will be discussing before delving into the chapter itself.

Each "Step" increases your familiarity with Windows 8 and the Practice Exercises reinforce what the chapter topics are demonstrating. Some Exercises require Practice Files that are available on the O'Reilly website. Many exercises do not require downloaded files. All exercises are logical, informative, and reinforce what the authors are trying to teach. In every case where both Keyboard/Mouse and Touch Screen apply, they are presented and explained. All multiple ways to do something are presented. At the end of each exercise "Clean Up" instructions are given.

Unlike other Operating System "How To" Books, this book goes beyond the basics and covers such topics a Sky Drive, using Internet Explorer 10 (both the "app" version and the desktop version), Microsoft Market Place, etc. It covers each included "app" such as social apps (Email, Messaging, People, etc.) and multimedia apps (Pictures, Media Player etc.). In depth instruction is provided for connecting to a network and trouble shooting. In addition the book discusses safeguarding your computer with Anti-Virus software, firewalls, etc. Chapters are devoted to setting up the computer for additional users and safe guarding children. It talks about the many different types of users for the operating system and gives tips and help for all to get the most out of this new system.

The glossary is extremely informative and the appendixes cover three important topics:
1. Keyboard Shortcuts and Touch gestures
2. Enhancements and using Multiple Displays
3. A complete installation and upgrading guide

Kudos to Caprian Adrian, one of the authors for going over the book on O'Reilly and posting errata even before the official release.

This is a book that I can highly recommend both as a "How To" and a future reference guide. As near I can tell there are no pitfalls from late changes to the operating system. I use the RTM Windows 8 Pro version and everything worked exactly as presented in the book. The reader should use it as the title recommends "Step by Step." : "Originally published by the Denver Visual Studio User Group at [...]."

Lots of good info but needs better editing

Excellent info for all levels of users but some glaring typos. In addition, at least the kindle version tables and charts do not display well or require you to go to a website for viewing. Still give it 4 stars for excellent easy to understand information.

Needed for Windows 8

I was surprised at all the things I didn't know about Windows 8, even while using it. I think that Windows 8 needs a manual more than any operating system before. I've been reading the book on and off for a month, going back to certain sections, rereading some. I like the price point of this book and the pictures are a big help. Especially with a new operating system. Don't make the mistake of not buying the book and missing how to really make Win 8 work for you. You will not figure this OS out easily on your own.

Moisés Naím is a scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and an internationally syndicated columnist. For over a decade he was the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine and under his leadership, the magazine was re-launched, won the National Magazine award for General Excellence three times and became one of the world's most influential publications in international affairs. Naím also served as Venezuela's Minister of Industry and Trade and as executive director of the World Bank. Naím holds a PhD from MIT and lives in Washington, DC.

Insightful and compelling

Mark Zuckerberg hit it out of the park with this one, the first selection in his attempt to channel Oprah Winfrey with his own “book club.” The End of Power is a remarkably insightful inquiry into the limits of power in today’s wired world, when a tiny group of fanatics can upend national policy half a world away. As Naim writes, referring not just to global leadership but to corporate executive suites, established churches, and the military, “the powerful are experiencing increasingly greater limits on their power. . . In the twenty-first century, power is easier to get, harder to use — and easier to lose.”

We often speak of the complexity of the modern world, but we tend to lose sight of just how complex it is. Consider this: in 1941, when I was born, world population stood at roughly 2.3 billion, whereas today we humans number 7.2 billion. Then, there was a total of 61 sovereign states on the planet. Today, there are 193 members of the United Nations, more than three times as many. But the number of players on the world stage today is far greater than that, including a plethora of global and regional organizations and what the media has come to call “non-state players” such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, all of which have come into being in the last seventy years. The upshot is that a US State Department list of treaties currently in force runs to almost five hundred pages! Add to these facts the speed and breadth of reach of information technologies and “profound shifts in expectations, values, and social norms,” and the case seems made. “But the more fundamental explanation as to why barriers to power have become more feeble,” Naim writes, “has to do with the transformation in such diverse factors as rapid economic growth in many poor countries, migratory patterns, medicine and healthcare, education, and even attitudes and cultural mores.” In the midst of all this complexity, how could anyone hope to be the master of all he surveys?

Naim analyzes the means by which power is expressed, referring to them as Muscle (coercion), Code (obligation), Pitch (persuasion), and Reward (inducement). He posits three overarching phenomena that give rise to weakening the barriers to power: the More revolution (there’s more of everything now), the Mobility revolution (we and our money, not just communications, move around a lot faster now), and the Mentality revolution (“taking nothing for granted anymore”). Like any typology, Naim’s are debatable — other thinkers may carve up reality along different lines — but they ring true to my ear. After all, to note what he calls “a cascading diffusion of power,” we have only to look at the gridlock that has overtaken the political process in many nations (not just the US) and the shocking ability of micropowers — those “non-state actors” — to change the course of world history. Even “a core axiom of war has been stood on its head. Once upon a time, superior firepower ultimately prevailed. Now that is no longer true.” There are parallel developments in nearly every realm of human endeavor. For example, “the advantage long considered to be built into corporate scale, scope, and hierarchy has been blunted, or even transformed into a handicap.”

These are not superficial changes or limited to one region of the globe. “[S]ince 2004,” Naim writes, “three-quarters of the world’s economies have made it easier to start a business.” Rising competition, indeed!

Naim sees these developments as fraught with risk. He writes of five significant ones: Disorder (obviously), De-Skilling and Loss of Knowledge (witness Fox News), the Banalization of Social Movements (through social media, “sound bites,” and oversimplified pitches by politicians and NGOs), Boosting Impatience and Shortening Attention Spans (just look around), and Alienation (obviously).

The End of Power is endlessly thought-provoking — a worthy addition to our understanding of the way the world works today.

Moises Naim has an extraordinary resume. Born in Libya, educated at MIT, a former Venezuelan Minister of Trade and Industry and former Executive Director of the World Bank, he was the editor in chief of Foreign Policy magazine from 1996 to 2010. The End of Power is only the latest of the more than ten books he has written or edited.

An Excellent Read - A Misleading Title

Engaging, fast-paced and chock-full of information, it is a great read, hard to put down. The approach to analyzing power is novel and the premise on which the whole book is built is compelling, as many other reviewers have noted here, in particular, the three "Ms" - More, Mobility and Mentality - as analytical tools. The book argues that the nature of power today has changed; "minipowers" have arisen thanks to globalization and technological advances, in particular the digital revolution and Internet, and they are now able to successfully fight back the "megapowers" (read: nation-states; big churches and religious organizations; big, transnational corporations, trade unions etc). And the author provides vivid examples to illustrate what he means, well-chosen and convincing.

The trouble starts midway through the book when the time comes for the author to show that there is actually a trend towards decaying power. Naim fails to show that trend and the data he brings only shows that the nature of power may be changing, that it is become more fragmented, that it is shifting to newcomers. But it certainly does not mean that power per se is "ending" or that the megapowers will stop being big guys any time soon. On the contrary, with the rise in income inequality and the growing strength of finances worldwide - proof of which is now masterfully contained in another important book, Capital in the 21st Century, written by a brilliant economist, Thomas Piketty - what we are probably seeing is not the "end of power" but the rise of a different kind of power. A new class of people (the power elite? the so-called One Percent?) is now better able than ever to successfully lobby governments, or any other megapower, to advance its own interests. Though the art of lobbying has been around a long time and is nothing new - but then, the concept of a "power elite" is not new either. One could even reverse Naim's thesis and argue fairly convincingly that power is fragmenting in a million rivulets, leaving only the megapowers standing, re-inforced by growing financial strength.

In fact, Naim must have felt the ground shaking under his thesis because he doesn't really suggest any solution or offer a clear vision of what might happen once the supposed "end of power" is upon us. There is talk about alienation and entropy but no conclusion. Perhaps one reason for this weakness is that Naim's book came out in 2013, fully a year (or more) before Piketty's book. It is quite possible that Naim himself today would end his book differently.

And this is why I could not assign 5 stars to this book. Bottom line, perhaps the problem is more with the title of the book than its content - a catchy title to be sure, and no doubt the reason why Mark Zuckerberg chose it as the first book to read in his recently launched book club (250,000 members in just two weeks!). As the UK Guardian snidely remarked, the subject would obviously appeal to a billionnaire like him and the disruptive title provides just the kind of anxious frisson you'd want to get from a book about our society and where it's heading. It's a shame that it doesn't deliver on the promise held in the title. But it does one thing superbly: document the current change in the nature of power, how it works. And for that reason alone, it is well worth reading.

Some interesting ideas

It is definitely a book to get you thinking. That being said, I feel like it maybe is a little too dedicated to the idea that power is only tending towards fracturing and cumulative dissolution. I feel that the threat of a broader consolidation of power has only become easier in the sense of the effective power.

In 1950, there was only 1 nuclear power, and now there are many. That DOESN'T mean that that single nuclear power has gotten weaker, but rather that there is altogether more destructive power in play in the world. Even in 1950, it isn't as though the US could have "conquered the world" because it was the only country with nuclear weapons- that alone wouldn't have been sufficient. The same remains true today. The USA is the strongest nuclear power, and military power, but, comparatively the other major powers have ALSO become more powerful. The difference is, that while the US wasn't capable of decimating the world single-handedly in 1950... it could now. So could Russia. So can China. Perhaps so could France and Great Britain. The OVERALL ability to project force/destruction/power has only increased across the board.

The same could be said about economic power. While there was a global economy in 1950, it wasn't nearly as large and developed as it is now. That gives another lever of power to large countries which they really didn't have before. Hard and soft power have become much more interchangeable and mutually supporting. Economic sanctions in 1950 might not have had much of an effect on many smaller countries in 1950... but in the modern world? Besides countries which have explicitly prepared for them, they can be more economically devastating than an actual war, in some cases.

Definitely should be read!
