Based on a True Story

As a fan of high school football it this book was a very enjoyable read. It was nice to relive some great moments from the past while learning about some others. This book features some of the legendary teams, programs, coaches, and players. It also details some of the legendary games.

I am concerned about the number of errors I found just in the sections pertaining to the school that I am familiar with. At one point it said a player graduated in 1965 then named him as a running back on the 1968 team.

I would recommend this book but also treat it like a movie that is advertised as being based on a true story.

About the Author
Salim Ismail is the founding Executive Director at Singularity University, where he moderates most academic programs, and is its current Global Ambassador. Before that, as a vice president at Yahoo, he built and ran Brickhouse, Yahoo’s internal incubator. His most recent company, Angstro, was sold to Google in August 2010. He has founded or operated seven early-stage companies including PubSub Concepts, which laid some of the foundation for the real-time web. He also spent several years as a management consultant with CSC Europe and later with ITIM Associates. Ismail holds a B.Sc. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Waterloo in Canada.

Michael S. Malone is one of the world's best-known technology writers. Great characteristics on exponentially growing organisations, but ....

I learnt about this book via the Dutch marketing efforts at BNR-radio by the Dutch co-author Juri van Geest (it worked!).
Good stuff! What I really like about this book is:
- brain metaphor and acronyms for the internal and external focus. People tend to focus on the external and forget it won't work if you got your internal act together (Steve Jobs and Elon Musk knew/know this best I think).
- the chapters on the types of organisations, where the exponential characteristics are to be implemented. The downside risk and upside gain differ whether you are a real startup, a midsize company or a large multinational. Startup-enthusiasts tend to forget where they are implementing and put existing stuff at unnecessary risk. So good that they warn you to 'copy-cat' the right way.

There is one 'big but' I have on the usage on the usage of term exponential organizations. My objection to the exponential metaphor is that in nature exponential growing stuff is either really bad stuff (diseases such as cancer or ebola) or the end of a bubble (assets in financial markets, ending in a Mynsky Meltup or Meltdown), there are plenty of other examples [armstrongeconomics.com is a fun source for this].
This should also make you wonder on exponential organizations. If you know how to ride the wave towards the top you are fine, but the ride down can be lethal or financially unsound (when not on the shorting end).

When you disrupt something and grow exponential, bear in mind that something allowed you to do so, but might strike you after all (when catching up). Often referred examples Uber and AirBnB are currently predominantly battling with (local) government in the new places they go, and governments. Saying that it now can't be stopped is foolish. History tells us that governments tend to be bad losers, when (potentially) expected tax is involved. So mind your tail(risk).

If you are interested in the subject start-ups you should certainly read book 'Zero to One' of the quoted Peter Thiel. He will share you some 'secrets' to prevent you from attempting to grow before it is good for you.
And IMHO people should stopping using 'disruptive' in every sentence. We sort of know that by now... :-)

You shall pass this one

I wanted to like this book. It promised a big idea, how to build an exponential organization. However, it falls short on its own Massive Transformative Purpose.

While the case for ExOs is presented quite well, we all know that the pace is accelerating quicker than ever before. If you weren't aware of the speed of change and technology development before, you'll benefit from the summary of the paradigm shift in the first chapters. However, if you have been half-awake and kept your ear on the ground for any period of time, it's more of a collection of fact nuggets that you can use at cocktail parties.

"The Blueprint" provides a decent summary of "the stuff you need to do". But it prescribes a methodology without really showing why you should do it and how to go about really developing ExO. Many of the "steps" or important pieces were covered in a single paragraph or two. The book is filled with example companies yet their road to success on any particular step, area or aspect of ExO is covered superficially. Rarely you learn the deeper insights why they were successful and how they did it.

I had to laugh at the CxO section. The chapter itself might be worth the price of admission in terms of humoring content. I won't spoil the surprise but it involves lots of titles with piled-on new tasks and responsibilities without focus.

The book is passable for a manifesto and a war cry for the need to reinvent organization of human efforts for a purpose. As a blueprint and a go-to guide, not so much.

An absolute must read for those wanting to grow their organizations exponentially

In his book Exponential Organizations, Salim Ismail has addressed the current business model of most organizations which is based upon incremental and linear growth. His thesis is that the alternative of exponential growth, as espoused by Singularity University, can be gained by organizations that use new techniques that can vastly accelerate the growth and scalability of the organization and their competitive position. Many examples of companies that have used these new techniques are used such as Netfix, Apple and Craigslist. Another example that is addressed in detail is Airbnb which does not own its assets in the room rental space, and has now realized a market capitalization of almost $14 billion - unprecedented in corporate history in the traditional hotel sector. This is more than a reflection of the past and what can be done in the future to accelerate the growth of companies - it's a how-to guide that provides direction based upon the experience of these successful exponential companies. This book should be read by all C-level team members who have responsibility for growth and change adoption in their organizations - whether they are in large companies or small. If you bury your head in the sand and avoid the lessons to be learned on disruptive change that is addressed in this book - you do so at your own peril. Congratulations Salim on laying out this complex topic in a very readable manner - hopefully there is even more to come.

I like this book because it has a lot of computer science applications in addition to the more traditional physical science applications.

For example, Ch 2 is on ranking web pages (including Google's PageRank algorithm). Ch 3 has matrix factorization applied to information retrieval. Ch 5 is about image compression. Ch 8 has some network optimization applications.

Includes the software disc

First off: yes, this version includes the software and also the book. Second, I have no idea why you will sometimes see the software alone priced higher, that's weird. That being said, Willmaker is an excellent program. It's easy to use and well worth its cost. I don't have any really tricky or complicated aspects to my estate, so I can't speak to how it works for the 1%, but for us regular folks it's great.

Prince + 50% of Americans Do Not Have A Will...

Just the fact that you are CONSIDERING the fact that a will MAY BE A NECESSITY, listen to do professionals who explain what happens to entities like Prince who did not happen to have a will... link provided in the comment section.

Estate planning documents are not valid in Canada, Louisiana or U.S. Territories. They claimed they did not but apparently they do now offer a free one year subscription to Nolo's Online Living Trust which will keep your program current through 2016 but then they will come up with 2017 version just like they do every year.

WillMaker is one software that gets updated every year and regardless of the packaging that the software is sold, regardless of the box or the books that it comes in the packaging, the concept is the same, since it is the same software sold in all the packages for that particular year. It is the extras that you are paying for which are books that in most cases it is not a necessity at all. What is different between packaging is the yearly subscription, computer operating system and the additional items sold with the packaging. WillMaker is not a complete software for creating a trust which is for individuals with real estate holdings. For any entity with no real estate holdings it is a complete, very complete, easy and helpful software to use, worthy of every single penny that you pay for.

There are three scenarios to a human life when it comes to authority since that is what this software does, designates authority. When 1) one is alive and can speak for themselves but choose not to since either they are not available or simply do not want to, 2) when one is alive but can not speak for themselves even if they wish to, 3) when one is dead. Durable Power of Attorney covers scenario ONE. Will covers scenario and 1, 2 and 3 but only for money and holdings but not about any decisions of life for any medical issues. Health Care Directive covers scenario TWO when one wants certain medical treatments when they are not able to speak for themselves and it certainly covers only the medical issues not any money or holdings. Not everyone wants all those three authorities designated due to personal beliefs or their age or most likely they do not have anyone to trust so they may not want all three parts of the software except one or probably two. For example they may want to use POA so someone will have the authority to pay the bills or do certain things for them when they are out of the country but they may not be ready to deal with HCD when infact it is the most essential authority one can ever designate since that is the dying person’s wishes in writing, in advance who has already made choices about their physical body instead of allowing someone else's conscious or The Courts or a physician making choices at a time when they can not speak for themselves physically.

Willmaker asks all the questions that it should and more, much more including FINAL ARRANGEMENTS so that way money can go to donations or to a cause that you care instead of others wasting it where ever they want. You can write your burial instructions from where to how in what form and color. You can write your own funeral speech. You can request the ones that you hate not to be around even when you are gone especially when you hate the concept of them pulling another one especially at your funeral. It covers anything to everything from anyone in your life including loved ones to hated ones to your enemies, pets, neighbors, milkman and all. It covers those flakes who borrowed money and still have failed to pay you back and keep hoping that you die and go away when infact they will be surprised by your instructions that you have already specified in your Will when not around. It covers every single item that you own, have or is part of your existence including your body, organs to every single person that you know or assume to know. This software is a perfect choice even before you have to go to an attorney to write a trust since after all, you need to cover all the questions and think about every aspect of your decisions in advance before visiting an attorney. Excellent software for the price and you can update it all the time since situations really change as you get older as well as the one that you have trusted but fliped out of this planet before you do. Those individuals that you trusted and had put their names in these documents may not even be around or even if around, they may not even be worthy of your association so with this software you can update all documents anytime and anywhere. I would not get the download version since you can never re-install, CD is the way to go although it will ask you to update. Do not let others to speak for you, it is your life, speak for yourself in advance when happy and alert.

P.S. HCD document is worthless unless you can get it to the physicians at time of emergency so I keep a copy in my car glove box so in case of an accident they will have access to my HCD immediately. Furthermore, I have a copy of my POLST which is accepted in most states in US which goes on top of HCD. POLST is more important than the HCD and instructs physicians accordingly of your wishes which is legally accepted by all Emergency Hospitals in the US. Speak for yourself in advance without any hesitation since it is about you, not about them.

Quick, Easy Will

Not dead yet so I can't attest to how well it works but for a basic, quick will, it sets things up very nicely. You get both a book and installation CD. There are detailed questions to allow for many options. Yes, it is generic, obviously, but for a basic will this fits the bill and has got to be better than nothing. It reminded me of doing my taxes online, it is the same concept. You are able to get many end of life documents other than just a will and you can set these up and change them very easily with only a few keystrokes if you change your mind, as long as you get more witnesses and notaries to sign, of course. This made the process very easy for me.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

�

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi. Dr. Katja Hoehn is an instructor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Hoehn's first love is teaching. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards during her 14 years at Mount Royal College. These include a PanCanadian Educational Technology Faculty Award (1999), a Teaching Excellence Award from the Student’s Association of Mount Royal College (2001), and the Mount Royal College Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2004).

Dr. Hoehn received her M.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan, and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University. In 1991, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation presented her with the Max Forman (Jr.) Prize for excellence in medical research. During her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies, she also pursued her passion for teaching by presenting guest lectures to first- and second-year medical students at Dalhousie University and at the University of Calgary

Dr. Hoehn has been a contributor to several books and has written numerous research papers in Neuroscience and Pharmacology. She oversaw the recent revision of the Interactive Physiology modules, and co-authored the newest module, The Immune System. She has also played a large role in the development of A&P Flix™ animations and the Video Tutors in MasteringA&P, serving as a consultant and academic reviewer.

Dr. Hoehn is also actively involved in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). When not teaching, she likes to spend time outdoors with her husband and two boys, compete in triathlons, and play Irish flute.

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.
