Perhaps the best way to define Avro Manhattan’s work is to quote the Foreword of another book: Lucien Gregoire's The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I:

"In the 1980s, Avro Manhattan warned of the papal threat to force economic movement toward Marxism in the western world:

`The lack of importance the United States gave to the election of a pope after the death of pro-American Pius XII through the election of John Paul II has become paramount in the thinking of subversive elements in the United States--the lingering evidence too striking to be ignored.

The failure of the United States to influence the election of a pro-American Pope in 1963 was a lesson not to be repeated. The blatant adverse consequence of that blunder enormous, the price astronomical in terms of lost opportunity and the deployment of policies and billions spent by the United States counteracting the subversive actions of Paul VI.

Paul disseminated his pernicious and anti-American principles via encyclicals condemning the basic capitalistic tenets upon which the United States had been founded. He condemned the imperialism of money and private property claiming to give wealth and land to the poor was to give them God's province...

Paul's doctrine `Liberation Theology' took on horrendous roots where the poor were collectively dominant in Latin America, the stability of which was severely threatened. When they reached Central America, military and undercover operations had to be undertaken by the United States to halt Paul's revolution of the poor.

His doctrine `Populorum Progressio'--every man a fair share--fueled the movement toward communism in Europe forcing CIA intervention in Italy where Aldo Moro's `Historic Compromise' threatened to bring about a communist state.

In the spring of 1978, Moro was kidnapped while en route to the House of Representatives on the morning he was scheduled to move communist ministers into control of Italian Parliament. On thus same morning, Moro's closest friend and Paul VI's voice in Italian Parliament (Cardinal Volardo) was found dead in a darkened stairwell in a remote corner of the Vatican Bank.

In the wake of the Moro murder, Paul's sudden and unexplained death was wrapped with subtle speculations and vague rumors. His deterioration had been so extremely unusual whispers concerning the acceleration of his demise circulated.

These suspicions were well justified when his death was met with delight in the headquarters of the CIA and the Pentagon which had labeled him the `Pro-Communist Pope.'

Nevertheless, the providential death of Paul VI gave the CIA the opportunity to carry out its scheme to force election of a pro-American Pope. It joined factions inside the Church backing the Opus Dei anti-Communist candidate Polish Cardinal Karol Wojtyla...

When the avowed Marxist--Albino Luciani--was elected, it struck a nerve of shattering proportions in the United States. In CIA headquarters the ball began to roll...'" (end of quote of Avro Manhattan)

The last days of Avro Manhattan

As a follow up to his thesis as to the murder of John Paul I in the 1980s, in 1990 a leak in the London Times disclosed that Avro Manhattan was writing a book proving: `The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I and other Marxist leaders in the western world.' The leak claimed Manhattan had proof linking the CIA and Opus Dei to the murders of Aldo Moro, John Paul I and his left-wing counterpart in the Orthodox Church - Metropolitan Nikodim, and a score of others.

Unfortunately, Manhattan died before he was able to publish his book. A week after the leak appeared in the press, Baroness Manhattan returned from Paris to find him dead in their South Shields' home (the reason no biography cites his date of death).

In 2013, Lucien Gregoire wrote The Vatican Murders: The Life and Death of John Paul I. Employing a barrage of testimony of the courts that tried the Vatican Bank Scandal, together with medical and criminology advancements not available to Manhattan at his time--Gregoire proves Avro Manhattan's thesis: The conspiracy that planned the Great Vatican Bank Scandal was the same conspiracy that plotted the Murder of John Paul I.

Well over eighteen million Mexican-Americans live in the United States yet their history, literature and culture is conspiculously absent from the educational/social structure of so-called mainstream America. Enter, Growing Up Chicana/o which explodes the myth of the absence of the Chicana/o voice. Chicana/o is name the children of mestizo heritage (blending of the original people of the "New World" with the Spanish conquerers) have given themselves in defining who they are as a people and a growing political entity. The stories presented in this volume are unique in speaking to the reader in two voices (English and Spanish). You hear the story in English but the underlying tone and richness is Spanish. The interweaving of autobiography with fiction is a remarkable art which gives the reader an understanding of Chicana/o culture. Gerald Haslam's story, "The Horned Toad", centers around the relationship of an English speaking boy and his Spanish speaking Grandmother. The interplay of these two individuals shows the tensions of two worlds, two languages. Alicia Gaspar de Albar explores her cultural schizophrena through her story of a teenage Chicana coming to terms with her lesbianism. These and other stories explore the vast richness of a people who have had a great impact upon the United States. This text is both an introduction to Chicana/o life and literature as well as a challenge for the so-called mainstream to pay attention to this significant group. Mexican-Americans are no longer geographically confined to the west and southwest. Their migration to other states have caused school systems and politicians to take notice. This book is fresh!

This book is a great book to have if you grew up Chicana/o yourself. It is both painful, joyful, and uplifting to recognize familiar experiences as told by the various authors. For those who are not Chicana/o, this collection offers a multi-faceted perspective of a group of people who have long been part of U.S. history. Chicanos, like every other ethnic group, have both their shortcomings and triumphs. We have experienced both oppression and hardfast pride. This book is a sweet example of how complex the lives of Chicanos are. A good book to read and then pass on to a friend.

Thematic Rhythms

Lopez creates an engaging frame for the vibrant visions of the thematic rhythms at play in the lives of the voices of this book. I have always been struck by Tiffany's ability to make stories and their meanings accessible to all, having the patience to explain the deeper dynamics at play within the stories to those who may be labeled as unable to understand the depth of such stories (including me). Thank you Tiffany for the great book and for being the best teacher I ever had at University.

Good Intro at a Steep Price

OK, it covers the basics in a fairly easy-to-read format and moves right along. It is a well-designed, reader-friendly book, but a bit repetitive. The same statements appear in the intro, in the middle, and in the end summary of each chapter.

I take off one star simply for cost. No way is this intro-level material worth over 100 bucks. This is a $20 book in gold plating.

Another star off for quite a number of spelling errors and other typos and goofs (repeated sentence/para fragment, etc.) that should have been caught in proofreading. Hard to believe these are still being carried along in the THIRD EDITION. These little glitches don't interfere with the usefulness of the book, but given the price, they owe us a PERFECTLY PROOFED text. Everybody else gets it right--why can't this team? And, a working paralegal who made these types of errors could be fired. It's ironic and silly for the book to contain such goofs.

Excellent Overview But Web Resources Tricky

The audience for this book is Paralegals, and the book is ideal for that audience, plus many others for self study as well as thorough refresher reviews for the bar. The author leaves no stone unturned on the coverage front (100%), and on the currency - recency front gets a B+. Coverage of things as current as domain name protection and orphan drugs is thorough and up to date, but the author does not go in depth on the 2011 America Invents Act. I thought the online appendices might, but the online piece is still a nightmare (hopefully to be corrected soon?).

Why a nightmare? Because when you go to the book's site (delmar - cengage), it's mostly ads for paralegal courses and other products. When you finally, after numerous clicks (try putting the author's name in the search box) get to the right site, you will get to the book's page, and then click student resources on the right, it takes you to purchasable flashcards and e resources IF you bought the book there.

Don't confuse THIS book's online experience with the author's web recommendations, however-- she gives awesome and up to date internet resources (all are current and easy to access with very few dead links) WITHIN each chapter. You've probably read about the Chinese hacking our IP-- well, the author shows how to do so legally, for example (p. 256) how to search the copyright office's records. If you have a data mining program like Smartlogic's Semaphore, R - Rattle, or Carrot2, you'll be able to surf the heck out of many government offices with this book's help and numerous, current online resources and addresses.

For reference, I'm the VP of Technology for PayRoy dot com -- our job IS to search patent, copyright, trademark and many other IP databases both public and private. From that perspective, this book is FULL of very important PRACTICAL tips, and ideal for self study. On the other hand, it is not the law school 1,200 page Smith vs. USPTO judicial review text that will teach you detailed IP law. Most of those texts refer you to Lexis Nexis for details anyway, as does this fine text. I was one of the original authors of the Orphan Drug Act, for example, and was tickled pink that the act was covered in some detail, which it's not in some "big" $600 "law school" IP texts!

Don't get me wrong, there are numerous fine and fun case studies peppered throughout all the chapters, and in this edition they are really current. None of the Amazon headings stuff tells you that this is the 4th edition either (at this writing, it just says Edition:Paperback) -- so if you do buy this from an Amazon vendor or Amazon Warehouse Deals used (this is pricey but worth it), be SURE you're getting the most recent edition! Note to MY customers (Engineers and their IP Attorneys): YES, she DOES cover circuits and semiconductors in detail, amazing!

I love this textbook

I usually don't write reviews, but want to write about this textbook as it was really great. So much detail, but so logically connected that it's easy to understand the complex world of trademark, copyright, patents and trade secrets. Some people might say that it's a bit repetitive, but this is what worked great for me, because after reading 10 chapters after learning a concept, reading about the same concept in a different setting made everything easier to comprehend. Thanks to this book I got a huge A in my paralegal IP class.

Interesting

I enjoyed this book because it wasn't like any other fantasy book I had read, which i'm usually not into, for the record. But I liked reading Aware. There were many spelling and grammar errors, but that is to be expected with a self published author.

I have already recommended this book to several of my friends, of which they cannot wait to get their hands on.

I liked how there was a new problem more often, instead of the regular boring reads that i usually go for.

Aware was interesting, and it made you think about what this girl/animal was going through.

Not a very long book, 143 pages or so, and I would also recommend it for that reason too, if you just want a quick read, this is the book to choose.

great storyline

This is a self published author and it is evident when reading, my inner editor came out numerous times while reading which probably took away from enjoying the storyline itself. It has lots of potential and was a good short read.

The premise of the storyline was an interesting take, an animals perspective of the classic "island of dr Moreau." The overall character development kept you interested throughout the story, though I have to say I am tired of the woman changing to be with her man twist.

Great for a general overview of America's role in WWII

I really enjoyed this book. For a long time I wanted to read a general history of the entire second world war, and the nice thing about this particular one is its use of some more contemporary perspectives. The book is split almost evenly between Miller and Commager's informative text and first person accounts by the soldiers and reporters who were actually in these battles. As such it paints a vivid portrait of the asolute hell that the world was so relentlessly plunged headfirst into in the first half of the 20th Century. There is emotion as well as research here, and a nice tribute paid to the black and Asian soldiers who fought on behalf of their country - a country which had, paradoxically, treated them with such disdain. This really is not a comprehensive history, per se, but at about 650 pages for the entire war, it never could be. It is an engaging, enlightening, and disturbing book, though, which is all one could ask from a general history. Lots of pictures and about 25 maps round it out - there could stand to be some more maps, but I used the Cassell Atlas of the Second World War to supplement this with. Another good point is that this is really a high quality book. It is oversized and a bit heavy, and the paper is a thick stock with very easy typeface. The book also lies flat, which might be an important consideration. This was obviously the pet project of someone at Simon & Shuster, because in packaging and presentation this book is a cut above most new history books. A fine volume, and a welcome addition to anyone's library, be it a supplement to other history texts or not. I know that I will refer back to it when I continue my ongoing studies on the Pacific War, and that says quite about about its importance right there.

This 'revised and updated' version of the original written by Henry Commager is a prime example of why it is important to understand the origins and biases of the author behind the work. To quote Miller from his preface, "Commager was, understandably, too emotionally involved in the war to write an unsparing acount of it.", and of himself he writes "...I am an American interested in the character and conduct of my countrymen."
This is not meant to detract from the quality of the work. The book is well written, with a consistent style. It is hard to tell where Commager leaves off and Miller picks up. The narrative is heavily supported by relevant passages and quotes from the soldiers and journalists involved in the action. It provides a feel for the actual events (at least as far as print can do that).
In order to fully understand historical events it is necessary to understand the various viewpoints. This book, written by Americans, primarily for Americans, presents a valuable view of one facet of the jewel that is history.

The best one-volume history of the war

One-volume histories of World War II are about a dime a dozen. Most of them seem to have the words "Cambridge" or "Oxford" in their titles, ignore the Pacific war, and are deadly dull.

For an American, Miller and Commager's book is the best one-volume history I have found. I say "for an American" because the focus is on battles in which Americans were the participants. The brutal Eastern front and the war between Germany and the Soviet Union get short shrift; the spectacular air, land and sea battles of the war between the U.S. and Japan get equal attention with the Western Front battles in Europe. Miller doesn't spend a whole lot of time on the events leading up to the war. On page 19 Germany invades Poland and the same breakneck speed in moving from one major battle to another continues. The analysis of the strategy and politics behind the war is succinct but adequate to enable the reader to understand the big picture.

What makes this history better than others is the reliance of the authors on the words of the participants in the combat. One half or more of the narrative consists of quotes from eyewitnesses -- mostly soldiers and journalists -- and this gives a worms-eye view of events that seems more valid, and certainly more interesting, that the detached analysis of many writers. This book gives you a good picture and what life was likein the front lines. The text is supplemented by many good photos and maps.

If you are an American and you can only afford to buy one book on World War II, this is the one you want.

Truth( not fiction) this book also became a prediction.

I first read this book while I was in Southeast Asia in late 1967 or early 1968. It was a shocker. I was living this book "in the flesh" even as I read it. Originally titled, "Sarkhan" it could easily have been Viet Nam, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, or Burma. While I wasn't a major player I experienced much of what was written by Msrs. Lederer and Burdick. I was stationed in northern Thailand, had a Hong Kong Passport, and spent many days aloft with Air America (CIA) flying to train Laotian and Cambodian troops on repair and maintenance of T-28 aircraft armament systems. I only wore a uniform while on base. This book seemed to have vanished from the bookshelves for many years (actually the U. S. Government had it removed.) First printed as "Sarkhan" in the fall of 1965, it didn't show up again until it was reprinted as "The Deceptive American" in 1977. I didn't run across a copy until December of 1998 in the Rockford, IL Public Library. Of and on I searched for "Sarkhan" for more than 30 years. For anyone who is a student of the Viet Nam series of conflicts this book summarizes the deception of the American public that took place under both the Johnson and Nixon Administrations. While still a novel, it would fall awfully close to "fact" if a few of the names were changed. I enjoyed it the first time I read it and my suspicions (concerning our Government pulling it off the shelves in the interest of security) were confirmed in the Preface of the 1977 version. Thank you Mr.Lederer.

Found at last-Missing Book Reappears Under New Title!

I first read this book under the title of "Sarkhan" as a college student in 1970. I was so impressed with the book that I have told friends about it for the last 30 years. This was the most insightful of the books about Vietnam available at a time when everyone was terribly concerned about what was developing there. As a political science major I was particularly interested in the steps that drew us into the Vietnam war. I have been frustrated for years about what happened to this book and why it literally disappeared from existence. If you are a history or political science buff this is a must read and if you have not read these authors other book"The Ugly American" I suggest you read it also. The new title,"The Deceptive American",may be more accurate than the original.
