ABOUT THE PROJECT:

Women are now more concerned than ever about the appearance of their genitals. The convergence of the trend to remove pubic hair which leaves the vulva more visible and open to scrutiny, the normalization of oral sex, and the ubiquitous exposure to pornography and the unrealistic ideals it creates, have led an increasing number of women to feel serious anxiety about their own genitalia. Frequently this manifests as a lack of self-confidence or diminished body self-image; for an increasing number of women, the level of psychological distress is so severe that they undergo genital cosmetic surgery. Labiaplasty (reduction of the inner labia, most often for cosmetic purposes) is now the fastest growing type of cosmetic surgery and is in many ways following the same growth pattern and cultural acceptance as breast augmentation did in its early years.

While vulvas are more visible than ever, most women still have a strong sense of shame with regard to discussing or displaying their own, or looking at another's vulva. Pornography, whether online or in print, has come to serve as a very common tool by which women and men learn about sexual behavior and anatomy. Unfortunately, pornography depicts a severely limited scope of genital diversity. Analyses have found that there is a strong tendency to display genitals at the extreme end of the range of diversity: small, hairless and with little or no visible inner labia. This misrepresentation is dangerous as it conveys an artificial norm to which women often feel they need to conform.

There are very few resource tools available for women and men to gain a true appreciation of genital diversity. This skewed understanding leads many women to feel that they are alone and abnormal in their body and in their experience. The awareness of such procedures as labiaplasty can serve to further heighten women's belief that there is in fact a "normal", and that surgery is a suitable remedy for "abnormal" genitalia. This project stands in defiance of these societal constructions which serve to limit our growth, understanding and empowerment.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

I'll Show You Mine is a photo study of female genitalia and a window into women's experiences of their genitals. The book contains 120 photographs of 60 women, with all women photographed from the same two positions. Each woman was photographed in the same conditions and the photos are shown in the book in true-to-life size and color, as this is the best method to accurately display the diversity of female form. Accompanying each woman's photos is text written by the woman, detailing her challenges and/or successes as pertains to her relationship with her genitals. The photos in the book demonstrate and celebrate the wonderful diversity of the vulva; the stories illuminate the range of experiences that women have relating to their genitals in a world where mass media and pornography increasingly set the standards for sexuality and the look of all body parts, even our genitals.

The book is printed in Canada and is made to the highest quality in all ways: it is 7" tall by 10" wide and opens in a landscape layout; the paper is matte 100 lb FSC-approved stock and the ink is soy based; the covers and spine are coated with a scuff-proof laminate that protects them from minor damage and all but eliminates fingerprints.

10% of the sales of the book is donated to women's charities, locally and internationally.

The book is available free of charge for educational use to women's, men's, teen and family resource centres; physician's offices; sexual health clinics; K-12 school counselors; college counseling and resource centres; and more. Visit our website for more information.

Review
What a gift! Robertson s collection of stories and photographs is sure to help thousands of women become more comfortable with how their labia --Judy Norsigian, Our Bodies Ourselves

"Both shy and bold attendees of my workshops have poured over the book many told me how just a few minutes with the book gave them life changing realizations about vulvas." --Ruth Neustifter, Ph.D., MSSW-MFT

The photographs and the candid stories are at once discomfiting and fascinating in their diversity, and they re lovely, too... Why not bring vulvas out of hiding, treat them with reverence and respect and awe, and maybe even adore them and name them like men do with their dangling bits? --The Vancouver Sun

Gorgeous photo book with great stories
By Sarah B
I was lucky enough to get a copy of this book to offer my clients. I'll Show You Mine is a beautifully photographed book of vulvas accompanied by small, personal stories. I wish I would have had a book like this when I was younger as it offers a rare opportunity to see the female form without the context of pornography being attached. These are women from all over, giving you an authentic view of the awesomeness of the vulva! Some of the stories are heartbreaking, some frustrating, but all inspirational. I recommend this book for counselors, teachers, physicians and well, everyone else.

A Beautiful and Powerful Book
By Sabine
What a powerful and necessary book. I am a sexual health educator working with teens, and it is alarming how much misinformation young people (and old) have regarding genital diversity. This book blows those misconceptions away, displaying such a breadth of body types. I have seen the effect this book has on young women, and for that, I think it should be mandatory curriculum in health education classes. The short narratives written by each women are similarly transformative, and there is such a range of experiences that most women will be able to relate to many of them, while gaining a deeper understanding of the experiences of other women, including two transgender women.
This is a new favorite book in my collection.

HIdden beauty
By wiredweird
This certainly isn't the first photo essay dedicated to vulvae in all their variety. No matter - each collection offers a different perspective. This presents each woman in frontal view, as you'd see her standing, then again in more open pose, revealing the inner detail. And, with each pair of pictures, there's a brief essay by the woman offering herself to the camera. The essays range widely in tone, some more mystical, some (to quote one contributor) "Feministy or Earth Mother Birthing Goddessy," many with darker back-stories of shame or abuse. As a male reader with warmest regard for the women who've been my friends and intimates, I was shocked (though maybe not surprised) at the number in that last category.

But, however much their thoughts interest me, the photos dominate this study. At the risk of sounding obvious, every woman is unique, in face, figure, and all her little details. Her vulva might display that uniqueness more than any other part of her. Although built to a common plan, as faces are, each one differs from every other far more than faces do. I don't mean just in the piercings and grooming variations, but in the natural sculpture of delicate tissue. Perhaps that individuality, each one being so distinctive, is part of why genitals are so often hidden - the commonplace parts of her are for everyday business, but her unique self is something to share only with her closest.

More the loveliness of each one, the timelessness impressed me, too. The front notes say that the volunteers range from nineteen to their sixties. For the life of me, I couldn't tell by looking. Maybe a more mature woman would be less likely to dye her pubic hair or to have piercings, but those are indirect clues only. Maybe "forever young" isn't the right term, or even respectful to fully mature women, but "forever charming" covers what matters.

Marma Points The Mystical Doors of Perception

In ancient Vedic times, marma points were called bindu-a dot, secret dot or mystic point. Like a door or pathway, activating a marma point opens into the inner pharmacy of the body. The body is a silent, universal, biochemical laboratory operating every moment to interpret and transform arising events. Touching a marma point changes the body's biochemistry and can unfold radical, alchemical change in one s makeup. Stimulation of these inner pharmacy pathways signals the body to produce exactly what it needs, including hormones and neurochemicals that heal the body, mind and consciousness. This deep dimension of marma therapy has the potential to unfold spiritual healing.

Marma points are an important element of Ayurveda's healing power. Developed in India centuries ago, these energy points profoundly affect the body, mind and spirit and facilitate the deepest levels of healing. Prana is the current of energy that infuses every cell within the body. Stimulating marmani (energy points) directly taps into this reservoir of energy and promotes health.

This work is the first of its kind to systematically present all 117 marmani according to their individual energetics and to compare them with the Chinese system of acupuncture points. Detailed commentaries for each marma shed light on their diagnostic and therapeutic scope. Marma therapy integrates vital knowledge of the energy points with specific techniques of Ayurvedic massage, detoxification, acupressure, aromatherapy, yoga practices, meditation and more.

This book is a valuable resource for Ayurvedic practitioners and acupuncturists as well as medical doctors, massage therapists and yoga therapists. It also serves as a foundation to develop tools for one's own self-healing and for students of various medical systems who are motivated to pursue a holistic approach to health.

Review
Ayurveda and Chinese medicine are the world's two preeminent systems of holistic health and healing. These two systems, each complete in itself, have been cross-fertilizing for millennia, and will continue to do so for generations to come. This truly timely book, which presents one approach to how each system's concepts might be accurately translated into the idioms of the other, blazes a trail that future efforts can expand into a traditional medicine information highway. --Dr. Robert E. Svoboda, B.A.M.S., author, Ayurveda: Life, Health and Longevity, the Aghora series

This is not your typical book about Ayurveda and yoga. One of the topics the authors write about is based on their personal knowledge of traditional yoga postures. But they also offer insight into the ancient practice of Indian pressure points, or marma, which are stimulated in the body during yoga poses. What is unique is how the authors connect the two practices. Following their suggestions can contribute to your deeper understanding of your body and to enhanced health. Recommended for yoga teachers and students alike. --Judith Hanson Lasater, Ph.D., P.T., yoga teacher and author, including 30 Essential Yoga Poses

An excellent and invaluable resource for acupuncturists to enhance their clinical knowledge of acupoints. The authors offer an insightful comparison between Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine and how both systems have a similar approach to heal body, mind and spirit through treatment of these energy points. --Dr. Qijian Ye, Former Professor, Academic Dean, Southwest Acupuncture College

Simply the Best
By A. M. Rei
I've read many (good) books on Marma Chikitsa, from western and Indian authors. But I always felt that something was missing. This book from Dr. Lad is simply the best and most complete book. It brings a comprehensive description of 117 points (more than all other books), and a very interesting correlation with acupoint. It is certainly an essential book for those who want deeper studies on Ayurveda.

Finally, polygamy is brought out of the darkness and into the light. As a long-awaited approach to polygamy from a Mormon perspective, More Than One is a fascinating new book from LDS author Shane LeGrande Whelan. An excellent resource for those who have an interest in the Mormon Church, Tom Green and the confusing issues of polygamy.

Whelan’s thorough research has resulted in a comprehensive collection of stories about life in early polygamous families. More Than One contains over 80 brief, first person accounts of pioneer life in plural marriage including how couples met through divine intervention, how they chose another wife, and how the husband shared his time and affection.

The author also provides evidence that plural marriage was a fulfillment of biblical prophecy and paints an intriguing picture of how life would be today if we were to once again practice this divine principle. This unique book leaves the reader with a greater understanding of plural marriage as well as appreciation for those practiced it. More Than One enlightens the mind, touches the heart and moves the soul.

Intriguing and Unique
By Teri
I am surprised at the preachiness of some of the rather negative reviews, which seem to be more interested in arguing about whether or not polygamy is right or wrong, rather than actually reviewing this book. The author certainly takes a position in the book, and presents it well. Whether or not you or I disagree with his position doesn't matter.
It is an interesting book, and is well researched. I've read several books on this subject, and there were journal entries included in this book that I hadn't seen before. Always a pleasant discovery.
The book offers an opportunity to examine the belief system of people who chose to live this lifestyle. The first portion of the book allows these people to speak for themselves, and it is evident that these were truly sincere and committed individuals, notwithstanding the many struggles to which they were subjected.
Whether or not a person accepts the premise that polygamy is a legitimate religious doctrine, it cannot be disputed that there are people all over the world who still espouse it as part of their own personal belief system, and even practice it.
The book succeeds in linking past to present and encourages the reader to take a fresh look at those who embrace polygamy in modern times.
There are many cultures who practice traditions that may not be embraced or immediately understood by outsiders. As an educated society, part of our responsibility is to refrain from judgments based on ignorance and stereotypes. If we are open-minded, we are less likely to oppress other cultures simply because we discover them to be diverse from our own.
Shane Whelan's book opens the door for further study into this fascinating aspect of former and present Americana.

I fought the law and the law won...
By S. A. Chapman
Polygamy has split Mormons into many groups, but there is one clear winner in the numbers game - the church with temples everywhere, and armies of clean-cut young men who come knocking at your door bearing a badge that marks them, curiously, as an "Elder". This is the church that taught polygamy was the ideal form of marriage, before running into so much oppression from the US Government that a series of revelations were needed in order to turn it into an organisation that practices monogamy and tries to be classed with the Christian mainstream.
As with most religions, many Mormons may know little about their forefathers, and the detailed teachings of their church, and may be content to bask in such ignorance. But for a few, like Whelan, ignorance is not bliss, and this leads to the discovery of reams of testimony in favour of polygamy from members of a church that places great emphasis on personal testimony as evidence of truth.
This digging uncovers a sense of a number of important points:-
1. First wives who considered polygamy was a great hardship they were enduring for their faith, yet ended up seeing good results.
2. The wider Mormon community who doubted polygamy and who were surprised to see it turning out OK.
3. How polygamy was especially common for leading men within the church and how it continued after the Manifesto that was supposed to stop it.
4. How early Mormons lived through times of deprivation and high mortality rates for children and adults.
5. How the entire Mormon experience is so America-centric, and truly deserves the name of "the American religion".
In the process, Whelan provides a useful antidote to much slanted bad publicity against modern polygamists. Some people liked it - many women enjoyed it and found it better than anything else that was on offer - trying to paint it as all bad just because it doesn't fit with feminist ideology ignores the experience of the majority interest group that voluntarily signed up to plural marriage - the women.
But this digging leads to a rather difficult discovery for modern Mormons. Summing up on Mormon Church teaching, we learn that the words of past Mormon President Joseph F Smith, make it "clear that participation in plural marriage will be a requirement for those seeking exaltation in the celestial kingdom. This may require a change in thinking for millions of members of the LDS church who feel that living a righteous life in monogamy is sufficient." Set against this is the requirement for a modern Mormon president to declare polygamy to be OK again, after a change in the law, a change in social responsibility, and a change in religious principles to make such a prophecy acceptable.
Whelan views the practice of polygamy as essentially required by Mormon doctrine, and involving the rights of single or divorced Mormon women, and of pre-mortal spirits who are waiting to be born into good Mormon homes. When all this is set against the background of a church that is not moving towards polygamy, the only way of breaking the tension is to say that that the current Mormon church must "one day" change its position back to one in favour of the practice of polygamy.
But this review is written from an evangelical Protestant view of the Mormon faith, that opposes Mormon theology while remaining tolerant of their one-time practice of polygamy. That means I don't have to go with the idea that everyone will wake up one day and think that polygamy is OK. One thing I noticed was the way the history didn't include black Mormons, because the church denied black men the priesthood until the 1970's. The church doctrine changed to suit what was politically acceptable in the 1970's, as it had in the 1890's. Why would it suddenly go against the flow to return to a principle it safely buried a hundred years ago? Whelan tries to find supportive quotes from current Mormon President Gordon Hinckley, but these merely add up to saying nice things about the pioneers and family values, and Hinckley's backing for polygamy is only noticeable by its absence. This is reflected when Hinckley appears on TV downplaying the central role of polygamy in Mormon history and doctrine.
Another mainstream Mormon, Elizabeth Harmer-Dionne, has studied the impact of the law on Mormon belief, and found that it promoted cognitive dissonance - that the law changed the practice, and believing one thing while doing another was so stressful that something had to give. This effectively means that the law won, and changed the Mormons' belief. But if you really believe in a religion, you can't have ultimate truth dictated to you by a bunch of non-believers, even if it is the US Supreme Court, and you end up in Whelan's position, waiting for times to change back. I don't want to stop Whelan from marrying another wife if that's what he and his family think their faith requires, but I can't help but think he's waiting for the train that never comes.
"More than One" presents an interesting challenge to modern-day Mormons about the future of their faith. It does it in a way that will be meaningful to Mormons, emphasising the teaching of their church and the experiences of their ancestors, but it is in the end a book by, for and about Mormons. Other readers may find it interesting to peek into this world, and to consult the resources Whelan has gathered together, but may notice that it doesn't cover the more "difficult" pieces of history when Mormons were telling the authorities or each other one thing, whilst doing another. It covers enough to show that this tension still exists in the Mormon church, and to put modern Mormons in the difficult position of seeing whether they can find a way to reconcile their past with their present, without deferring the conflict to the future.
