Impressive debut. Can't wait for more!

What's Fair :
Great opening story that leaves you with just the right amount of dread (which is great with Halloween around the corner!). The writing was excellent. Shapiro does an exquisite job of giving the reader a connection with the narrator - which makes the climax of the story that much more jarring. My only problem is that, for my tastes, it's "message" was too subtle. Ironically, I had the opposite problem with the second story.

From the Pit:
This is the more imaginative story of the bunch. One of the biggest challenges of writing short story sci-fi is that you have to build a world for the reader very quickly. Shapiro accomplishes this very smoothly. It is essentially a parable about a controversial social issue. As I was reading it I couldn't help but be impressed with how clever the idea was. Unfortunately, there's a line the antagonist says that essentially blurts out the overarching analogy. Obviously, it doesn't ruin it but it was out of place in a story that I enjoyed mostly for its clever subtlety.

Utopia:
This was my favorite of the bunch. Almost every worldview has made its case in the Dystopian Future genre. Shapiro does an excellent job of touching on themes that put forth his worldview as offering the best critique. The conversation at the end makes me wish the author would give it the full book treatment and write his own sci-fi Road to Serfdom with this short story essentially being its last chapter.

Ben Shapiro's first foray into the fiction world is an impressive debut. I'd give it a 3.9 but I had to bump it up to a 4.0 because Utopia has the distinction of depicting the most judicious use of the Pentateuch I've ever read.

An enjoyable short read

Three (Very) short stories. Each is a quick read but thought provoking. All three are allegorical in nature. I am not sure how to categorize "What's Fair". "From the Pit" is science fiction. "Utopia" is (in a predictable irony from the title) the story of a dystopic future.

One minor problem I will mention with the KINDLE VERSION (hopefully an editor will fix this quickly so the complaint will not make sense to future readers) is that the three stories are not listed separately in the table of contents. It may be nitpicking but it makes the formating seem unprofessional when you can not just jump to the second or third story if you want to rather than paging through the ebook.

I will not go into detail about the allegories, but as you guess; by either being familiar with the author or by the fact that the first several negative reviews are both obviously fake and dishonest; the lessons are conservative in nature. The author does show potential with writing fiction and I hope that he does more in the future.

Their sagas, and the rites and rituals that have evolved at Arlington – the horse-drawn caissons, marble headstones, playing of Taps, and rifle salutes – speak to us all. You will love this book

This book is filled with fascinating stories centered around the widely known and largely unknown people who now call Arlington Cemetery their permanent home. Poole has done a masterful job in researching for this book. I found myself many times not able to put the book down until I finished reading of a particular individual who now lies interred on the grounds. For me, one of the most interesting sections of the book is the one that describes the history of the tomb of the unknown soldiers from the various wars. I learned a great deal from reading this book. If you like history, you will love this book.

Intriguing, Lively, Romantic, Sinister, and Enchanting!!

This anthology offers something for everyone, and should not be missed!

#1 - Taken in Death by J.D. Robb - 5 stars -

For whatever reason, I haven't yet ventured into J.D. Robb's In Death series, even though my daughter is wild about these stories and owns every book. But I received the Mirror, Mirror anthology for review, so figured, why not give it a go. Holy cow! From the very first paragraph this story grabbed hold. It's a riveting retelling of the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale, and leaves absolutely no doubt in my mind why this series is so popular - Intense, intriguing, masterfully told... Ms. Robb is a brilliant author!

#2 - If Wishes Were Horses by Mary Blayney - 4 stars -

Told in shades of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, this is a delightful historical romance. It's a story about finding your perfect fit - be it in chairs, beds, or that once in a lifetime love. It's also a story about being careful what you wish for, because when your wish comes true, it might not happen in the way you had hoped.

#3 - Beauty, Sleeping by Elaine Fox - 5 stars -

This is a wonderfully imaginative and thoroughly entertaining retelling of Sleeping Beauty. It's unique, romantic, thoughtful, and I enjoyed every moment I spent reading. I also appreciated the 'moral of the story' which Ms. Fox wove neatly into this modern day twist on a beloved fairy tale.

#4- The Christmas Comet by Mary Kay McComas - 4 stars -

There was something special about this story...a feeling of hope, faith, love, and sweet but not sappy. Drawing from by Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Matchstick Girl, and the Brothers Grimm's The Star Money, theres just so much heart to this tale!

#5 - Stroke of Midnight by R. C. Ryan - 4 stars -

A modern day Cinderella tale, this story is entertaining and enchanting! I loved the strength of our heroine, Sydney, and her sense of adventure that led her to Cullen and their Happily Ever After!

The Bottom Line - I thoroughly enjoyed these stories. Each author has a distinctive, creative, and very entertaining voice and I'm looking forward to reading more of their writing!

So far, all are good stories

The JD Robb story was good. A bit hard to develop the usual characters in a short story. I am ok with that since I have read all of JD Robb's books, and I am getting a bit tired of the angst in the flashbacks and the backstory each time. I think that if I were not up on the story line, I might be a bit confused since all of the usual characters are here. But it was good. I usually buy these short story books and read my favorite authors and then ignore the others after the first page in each. But this one is better than usual. I am now on the last story and I actually think I may read the whole book! Amazing. Some are better than others, of course, but all are worth reading. Each has a tie-in to a fairy tale. I am not getting the tie-in yet on the last story but I am sure it will be there. Still reading that one. All in all, worth the money. Good job, MIrror Mirror!

A new take on fairytales

I will never look at fairy tales the same again.

Mirror, Mirror features five very talented author's takes on the classic stories Hansel & Gretel, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and The Little Match Girl.

With each author giving their dramatically unique spin on their chosen fairy tale Mirror, Mirror becomes more than your average anthology. It almost becomes an event.

J.D. Robb, Elaine Fox, Mary Kay McComas and R.C. Ryan bring in the contemporary while Mary Blayney adds a dash of historical. Having never read anything by any of the authors (although I have read Nora Roberts), I didn't know what to expect but had high hopes for this anthology.

I enjoyed each and every author's story and the fact that Mirror, Mirror wasn't just contemporary takes on fairy tales made it all the more enjoyable. My favorite though, was J.D. Robb's dark, suspense filled take on Hansel & Gretel. Told in a very convincing manner, it gave me chills just thinking that there are actually people in the world like the antagonist. Whoa, what does that say about me that I liked that story the best?

This anthology provides sterling examples of each author's style and really gave me a chance to see if I liked what each one had to offer, which I did and will be adding these authors full length novels to my "To Read" list.

Atlas of the Roman World

The Atlas of the Roman World traces the rise and fall of the Western Roman Empire during a period of over 1000 years. Historical periods over this time are divided into four categories. Early Italy and the Roman Republic, From Republic to Empire, Provinces of the Empire and The Empire in Decline. There are also special features on non-military matters such as art, religion and everyday life. There is a multitude of maps including military, topographical and geographical layouts and maps of the provinces of the Empire. For the military enthusiast, there is a list of the distribution of the Roman legions in the provinces during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. There are many photographs of archaeological sites and remains. The book concludes with a description of the limited Byzantine conquest of the West and a brief word on the legacy of the Roman Empire. It is an excellent source of information and a worthwhile addition to the library of anyone interested in ancient history.

My Copy Is Worn Out

This cultural atlas has become one of my most treasured resources. I have owned and consulted it for years, and now use my copy for research, preparing for teaching Sunday School, travel planning, and helping the boys with their homework. The atlas is particularly useful when exploring Rome beyond Italy, especially in the Western and Northern provinces. Oddly, the principal shortcoming is a good map of Italy and Sicily during the Empire. Anyone who touches the Roman World can benefit from this work, and know that his or her resulting communication of that World to others will be more compelling.
