No other country makes the effort the United States does to recover and pay tribute to its war dead – an effort Poole reveals in poignant details from the aftermaths of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World Wars I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and the conflicts in the Gulf and Afghanistan today. Every tombstone at Arlington tells a story: from scientists and slaves to jurists and generals and tens of thousands of ordinary citizen-warriors, among the more than three hundred thousand interred on Arlington’s 624 acres. You will love this book

This book is filled with fascinating stories centered around the widely known and largely unknown people who now call Arlington Cemetery their permanent home. Poole has done a masterful job in researching for this book. I found myself many times not able to put the book down until I finished reading of a particular individual who now lies interred on the grounds. For me, one of the most interesting sections of the book is the one that describes the history of the tomb of the unknown soldiers from the various wars. I learned a great deal from reading this book. If you like history, you will love this book.
