Where No Man Has Gone Before: A History of NASA's Apollo Lunar Expeditions (Dover Books on Astronomy), by William David Compton

This official NASA history chronicles the behind-the-scenes conflicts and cooperation during the Apollo expeditions. It shows how the space agency's scientists, who were primarily interested in the moon itself, worked out their differences with the engineers, who were charged with the astronauts' safe landing and return. The close collaboration between the scientists and engineers ensured the success of a program that remains a major achievement for both fields.
The first half of the book concerns the preparations for the Moon landings, tracing the development of the Apollo science program from the earliest days. The second half documents the flights that followed Apollo 11, during which twelve astronauts explored the lunar surface and returned with samples for investigation. The author drew upon the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center's collection of more than 31,000 Apollo-related documents and conducted more than 300 interviews with program participants to assemble this definitive survey.

Great book on Apollo commissioned by NASA .....

How is it that this book does not have any other reviews ? This book is excellent. Commissioned by NASA it is full of details on the moon program that will satisfy people with a passing interest and hardcore space geeks like me. A good companion volume would be "Apollo Expeditions to the Moon: The NASA History" also published by NASA........

Where No One Has Been Since
By B. Pohnan
This book makes a great attempt to document how NASA came to answer two fundamental questions about Project Apollo: (1) Exactly where, on the Moon, should the various Apollo missions be targeted and (2) What kind of science should be conducted on and from the lunar surface?

The answer to the first question is complicated because engineering and performance parameters limited the Apollo landings to a somewhat narrow band on the Moon's Near Side. Various groups of scientists then had to pick out the most desirable sites within that band. Of course the lists that these groups generated where not always the same and some of their lists had far many more sites than there were Apollo missions. The extremely complicated given and take between Apollo mission managers, operational managers, engineers, and scientists is described from an outside observer's detached point of view..

Then there was the second question which boiled down to, "Well we are here on the Moon, what do we do now?" Of course some scientists wanted lunar rocks and soil brought back to Earth, while others wanted to leave instruments on the moon to measure this or study that. These tasks too were limited by engineering and performance parameters. How many experiments could be packed, safely, on the lunar module where both volume and mass were at a premium. Also, how much lunar material could be safely put on aboard the lunar module and successfully launched from the lunar surface? Again, both volume and mass were at a premium. How NASA managed to reach the compromises with the various groups and not have serious bloodshed is a story unto itself.

Where No Man Has Gone Before is an excellent, non-technical overview of this sometimes ignored exploration aspect of Project Apollo and I highly recommend it. I suggest that the reader check out Appendix 3, which lists the 15 fundamental questions scientists hoped (in 1966) that Apollo would answer. Also, if the reader seeks further details and information, he or she should consider To A Rocky Moon by geologist Don E. Wilhelms, which gives first hand accounts of the give and take regarding land site selection. The International Atlas of Lunar Exploration by Philip J. Stooke provides many detailed maps of almost any potential lunar landing site that was on any credible list.

Starts slow and nerdy. Then becomes nail-biting and thrilling.
By Alan U. Kennington
This 1989 book, "Where No Man Has Gone Before", by William David Compton, is very professionally written by a real historian, not by a journalist or participant. So the first 50 or more pages seem quite dry, formal and bureaucratic. But luckily I stayed with it because as the story develops, the tension builds up. Even though I knew the outcomes of the various stages in the Apollo program, having watched it on TV at the time, and having read about it in science magazines during the 1960s and 1970s, I found myself anxious about the outcome of each moon landing as it was described in this book, only relaxing after each mission was completed. It was like being transported back in time. No one knew then how it would turn out. Disaster was always very close.

Some of the new things I learned from this book were the huge demands on the skills and knowledge of the astronauts, the disputes between scientists and engineers, the interesting choices for lunar orbits, the use of 100% oxygen in the command module, the nervousness about choosing landing sites which were not too rough, the impossibility of seeing anything while landing due to the dust clouds stirred up, the very substantial distances covered in the moon buggies, and the sudden public disinterest after the first landing. I learned a large amount from this book that I never knew about while watching it in real time on TV.

One negative of this book (for me) was the lack of diagrams showing the relations between the rocket stages and the command, service and lunar modules. But I guess such diagrams are easily obtained elsewhere. It would have been nice to have colour pictures too, but that would have put up the price, and there are more than enough colour pictures elsewhere. What this book provides is a serious, level-headed description of what really happened, not a shallow popular gung-ho ripping yarn.

There are very frequent references in this book to "Chariots for Apollo". So I have now put that book on order too.

The discussion of orbits in this book stimulated my interest in astrodynamics. So I have also ordered "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics", "Spacecraft Attitude Dynamics", "Modern Astrodynamics: Second Edition", "Theory of Satellite Geodesy: Applications of Satellites to Geodesy", "Introduction to Space Dynamics", and "An Introduction to Celestial Mechanics".

This book has restimulated my interest in a range of other subjects too. So I do definitely recommend this book if you can cope with a professional historian's dry account. It's a good overview of the most admirable engineering achievement of the 20th century.
