Some Thoughts on Scouts and Spies: Based upon the experiences of the author and historical observation, by Gerry Barker

It takes someone who has really done it to make sense of the nuts and bolts of scouting in hostile territory. This analysis is based on the lives and experiences of frontiersmen like Sam Brady and Simon Kenton in the Kentucky and Tennessee Indian wars. Included are the methods of silent movement, concealment, organization, equipment and internal signals. These techniques are timeless and have been the mainstays of scouts for thousands of years. The focus is on making them work.

"Some Thoughts on Scouts and Spies is not a book to read once. Instead readers will keep referring back to this book to expand their knowledge. It is a book for those those who want to improve their skills in hunting. It is a book for those who have become involved with the reenacting hobby, and find themselves studying and doing 'Historical Archaeology.' For all of them, this book will serve as a manual on the "Scouting" trade."

Small Treaties on Scout Lore

Small Treaties on Scout Lore

I really like this excellent little book "some thoughts on Scouts and spies" by Gerry Barker. This historically accurate text on primitive scouting tactics, techniques, and procedures dating back to Robert Rogers of Rogers Rangers fame; the topics discussed in this book are historical in nature and based on the authors experiences in another time and war. The author uses historical methods with his 16 years of military experience in the United States Army Special Forces where he operated in Europe and Asia. These deployments allow the author to observe it didn't indigenous populations at work and war. This book does not have all the answers or will make everybody happy, but it still holds its own as a significant text in the art and science of scouting. If you find this title interesting I also highly recommend "Robert Rogers' Rules for the Ranging Service: An Analysis" by Matt Wulff. Overall I highly recommend this booklet to the military historian and reenactor of this era.

Great little manual!
By Clair Bennett
Gerry has written the perfect manual for scouting and spying in the 18th century colonial tradition! For my purposes, this is perfect to hand to our ministry's youth for training and equipping for our colonial living history program centered around the French and Indian War era. This book can go from classroom to the field, easily carried in a haversack or inside a coat or frock. The information is easy enough to digest, so that our young inexperienced and more times than not, wilderness unfamiliar trainees, can learn quickly how our forefathers maneuvered the dangerous wilderness of frontier expansions. Knowing "how it was done" adds to the thrill of recreating the dangers of scouting hostile territory 250 years ago. I will attempt give one to everyone of our first year students!

Excellent reference
By Jay Oestreich
Both as a French & Indian War military reenactor, as well as having served in the Marine Corps I found many of the items discussed in this book to be both a refresher, as well as a fresh (old?) take on field techniques.

Gerry has taken items that fill volumes in military manuals and distilled it down to the essence of necessity, as well as having some interesting insights that make complete sense once though upon. It will become part of my regular reference as I continue my portrayal.
